Cleaner Living 2003

We undertook a renovation of all surface textures, doors, lighting, and glass in the bedroom / bathroom half of a standard California tract home (built 1959). Our goals were to update with healthy materials free of potential toxins while maintaining fairly standard building techniques. A secondary goal was to to manage within a conservative budget, avoiding any change to the structural framing.

In addition to the health benefits of the finishes and materials, the resultant renovation shows greater brightness and warmth, due to the increased use of natural woods, the enhancement of doorways and windows, change of the flooring, enhancements to lighting, and subtle and light paint choices, though darker shades could be chosen over time as the owner might desire. The design is completely compatible with the later phases of enhancements to other rooms and systems in the house.
